As far as the stacked combat damage goes, everyone states that it wasnt
even implimeted until 6th, well since 6th its been in play, and for 10
years now it hasnt changed. It is being changed to only keep completely
new players who know nothing about magic "tricks" from getting creamed.
I lost diving top to natrulizes and disenchants before I learned the
"trick". once I learned it didnt happen again. for all the newbies who
know nothing about MTG they will learn and become better with time as
all players do. It erks me that wizards is all about well we never
intended it to be this way, but for 10 years it was left alone,
$100,000's have been won in worlds do to the quality of a players
ability to know how to play. To change this will affect alot, you may
think man its only a few cards. if I were to list cards I am sure I
could get into the 1,000's of affected cards. From trample, to sacable,
to regen, to allowing damage to happen to 2 or more creature then
saving 1 or both becasue damage was assigned in a way that you have the
abily to pump and save something. Cards were made to take care of the
stacked combat damage, new abilies come with every set. make a new
ability not a change in the setup of the game play. combat tricks have
been apart of magic for a while. It is those tricks that win and lose
games. to take away the abilty to choose this card because it can do
this is "bumbing" down an extremely complex game. It was made complex
to make people think, now I see posts about well it makes it better
becasue now it more complex you ahve to choose 1 or the other. I do not
feel that this is the case. This new combat stack rule only helps the
completely new players. most old shool players understand how the mogg
fanatic works, most play that particular card because you can play it
that way. a 2/2 will not attack when a fanatic is in play. a 1/1 will
not attack when a tribe elder is in play. Its a staple, and if you
didnt know then you learned, and mostliky went out and bought some. If
WOTC really want to institute this rule, I say institute it on the
portal game as there are not instants or trickets persay in the
"newbie" portal games. I learned with protal, when I found out that
portal wasnt legal in tournies I stopped buying portal. for the maybe
10,000 people who may not play magic again outside they homes with
house rules, there will be 10,000 newbies who will start and stop
because of some other trick, and the rules will change again to suit
the newbie. In 6th edition the combat stack was created because the
idea is sound, now its changed becasue newbies cant handle combat
"tricks". what will happen after this no mana burn, oh wait thats a new
rule too :'( I am sure I will sign anything started to save the mana
burn, as its also a crucial part of the game play. aside from mana
burn, combat stacked damage is fundemental, I sould be able to play my
biting gale as an instant, to block an X/3 stack the damage and return
before it dies, I should be able to unsummon a creature after damage to
save the creature. Taking this away not only screwes with tons of cards
playablility, but screwed a ton of decks that have and have not been
created yet. I say it would be better to make an enchantment or some
untargetable abilty that is in play from start of that spell being
played to end of that games play to make instant combat damage happen.
like the creature that is "if this creature deals combat damage to a
player that player cant gain life", make a card that is "If this card
has been played and has resolved then combat damage cant be responded
to". I believe that idea would add more to the game without taking away
what I have known for 10+ years. I would say that this particular new
rule is not good. If the people who own MTG dont think its right the
way it is create a new card game as they have with yugo, pokemon, and
many others. for those that dont know how to play magic there are alot
of other games. for those that Know how to play magic there are ways
around everything. There is no 1 deck that wins 100% of the time. If
its all about the newbie, the vets suffer, if its more about the vets,
the newbies learn. I dont think that a person will stop playing becasue
of combat tricks. They learn and use them when they can afford it, or
find a way around it. I dont think that this particular rule will do
MTG any good, and for the newbies who the rule is being for that
wouldnt play becasue of the rule, will instead not play becasue of some
other reason. In the end it all comes down to how much money your
willing to spend. Good cards cost money, that is the way its always
been. Most people who stop playing MTG is becasue of that issue, they
dont have the money to spend to make a power deck, it has never been
becasue the combat damage can stack. it has always been "man I cant
afford to play". I dont play paper magic to much anymore becasue its so
costly to play both paper and online. so now I have 10,000 paper cards
I cant really do anything with except sell them, and if I wanna get
back into the Standard paper scene I have to spend a ton of money just
to make a good competetive deck. As far as I am concerened My game is
online now, 24/7 magic 24/7 tournies. I dont play paper anymore becasue
its so costly, as is the case with many people! I would hope that the
people at WOTC understand that, they arnt losing money becasue people
will not play becasue of the stack. they are only losing players that
cant afford it to begin with. I would hope that this particular rule
never changes, combat damage "stack" is important to most players, and
once you learn how to use it, it becomes an important part of that
players game play.
In conclusion, it is my opinion that for 10 years its been apart of
magic, if wizards never intended it to be played the way it is now they
shoulda never changed it to begin with. To change it back is like
stepping back in time, they added it to improve the game which I
believe it did, to take it away just takes that improvement away.
